Frequent users of Google Earth know that there are many unusual things waiting to be found, everything from crop circles to sunken ships. Last week, many were speculating that the lost city of Atlantis had been found using Google Earth. However, Google has come forward to explain what exactly your seeing on the map.

As it turns out the city like layout of the pattern on the ocean floor is actually caused by the use of the mapping equipment used by ships. This method called “ecosounding” is used to map out the ocean floor. However, side effects of this mapping method is that it often produces what are called ship tracks on the mapping information. These tracks follow along the path that the ship took.

Another problem with the Atlantis theory is the scale of the area in question. It is simply massive. If you use the measurement tool built into google maps you will find that the block that the lines form are over 8 miles long. Now, I suppose it is quite possible for a super advanced race to construct a city as big as what we see on the map. Conspiracy theorist start your engines.
