110mpg Mustang debunked
Mon, Jul 7, 2008
Apparently the people over at ecomodder have been following a story about a guy claiming to have modified his 1987 Ford Mustang to achieve an amazing 110mpg, while still cranking out 400 HP. Needless to there were some questions and not a lot of answers. More after the jump. After some good old fashion detective work, they discovered some interesting things about the car. It has been modified to run on e85, which is higher octane, but results in less fuel economy. They also noticed that the mustangs owner describes its efficiency as MPGe, but doesn’t bother to explain what that actually is. He makes several other dubious claims and despite a CNN story on the car, nobody has seen it actually use all that muscle under the hood.
For the full write up, head over to ecomodder. I should mention that the ecomodder site is a neat community of people who are interested wrenching for better fuel economy. Definitly something to check out.

This is not entirely true. While e85 runs at considerably lower economy in a flex fuel engine, in an engine designed to run on alcohol it will be considerably better ( due to the ability to run at higher compression). The only reason it does so bad in a flex fuel vehicle is because those models also have to be able to run regular 87 octane.
